  14. <p>     RESIGNED. David Baltimore, 53, Nobel-prizewinning biochemist;
  15. from the presiof Rockefeller University; in New York City. For
  16. five years Baltimore vigorously rejected charges by Margot
  17. O'Toole, a junior researcher at M.I.T., that the findings in a
  18. 1986 scientific papert Baltimore co-wrote were based on
  19. falsified research by immunologist Thereza Imanishi-Kari.
  20. O'Toole lost her job, but an investigation by the National
  21. Institutes of Health found this year that her charges had been
  22. correct. In his letter of resignation, Baltimore wrote that
  23. governing the university under a cloud "has taken a personal
  24. toll on me and my family which I can no longer tolerate."
